Best School Bags for Dyspraxia with Multiple Compartments

@briantheophilus if they left their books in class that would make his life a lot easier!! I’ll have to ask if they do that! Thank you 😊
I’ll definitely be doing similar for homework if our school work in the same way.

My son’s secondary school gave us different ideas. The one that worked for us was an ordinary bag, a concertina folder with coloured named sections for each subject and just taking what books were needed for that day. It was a learning curve, but my son settled easily into secondary school with all the routines and structure.

My son has an under armour rucksack from sports direct. It has the 1 main compartment that he puts his coat, lunch, drink and PE kit on those days. Then there's a laptop pocket for his homework folder and pencil case, he also has a notebook for doodles (part of his provision plan). It has 2 further front pockets, one which is big enough for his headphones, deodorant, tie in. Then a tiny pocket on the very front for his timetable, various access cards (toilet pass, time out the room card, uniform adjustments card, and 2 minute head down card) so they can be accessed immediately if needed. He isn't organised at all so this has helped him manage things without it being hugely complicated. They don't bring their books home anymore, haven't done since COVID. So he just has 1 plastic popper folder which any homework completed on paper goes into so it's there if he's asked for it (hardly ever is). X

@zeromark you're welcome! Make sure to speak to the school about what reasonable adjustments can be made. Apart from the occasional teacher not reading his student passport (usually cover staff), ours have been pretty accomodating xx

My daughter has dyspraxia but they have in school bags for lessons I have bought her plastic wallets to keep her books intact as she is very messy!! Hope this helps message me if u need any further advice x

@djchoirboy thank you! Yes he’s got a total inability to keep himself organised/be tidy and so any protection we can give his books will be a win.
I have seen other people comment on keeping books at school/class and I think that would help! 😊

@zeromark apart from the odd book for revision to bring home the rest of her books stay in school. Have you spoken to his new school as I found my daughters school extremely helpful and tend to keep her in order.

@zeromark on the bag question my daughter has an under armour bag from sports direct it has extra padding which protects her phone 2 compartments in main section plus another zipped section for her house keys I find helps her to keep things in place and not losing keys etc.

@djchoirboy yes we had a meeting with them last week (generic) and they asked for a backstory for each child and their needs. So I’ve been very clear about what his issues are and what help he would need. There are follow up meetings as well where hopefully I can discuss it with them personally.

@zeromark I had multiple calls prior to her starting with senco they put in place her having a lap top if needed leaving 5 mins early from classes to avoid the hustle and bustle. She sits at the front of the class for all lessons. All these things have helped her settle in well. Obviously hands on classes woodwork, cookery, pe she struggles with but she’s working on it.

Sounds like the school have been amazing! The head of SEN seems to really want to know what he can do to help, also he already knows my son from working at his primary school for 2 years previously so hopefully he will get the support he needs.
It’s constantly thinking on your feet for areas that they might struggle in though isn’t it?! I’m pretty sure he gets it from me, because I was always far slower than anyone else, but not to the degree his is.

My son has a puma bag from sports direct for this reason. He puts his timetable stationary and toilet pass etc in zipper, lunch box in front zip compartment. It has two sections in main bit so has his folders (a4 plastic popper ones different colors) for his random sheets homework and his books. The bigger bit for his bulky stuff like pe kit but they are now wearing pe kit to school instead which helps. I've laminated his timetable with sticky back plastic (already on his third set) and he's got a blazer buddy which is a clear pencil case with zip at top that fits in blazer and his timetable is copied on there too. I've added little strips of elastic so he can clip bottle etc and one for keys inside

@yamila thank you this is really useful! I think my sons school have started to do this with PE because their primary school followed suit - getting changed for PE is the stuff of nightmares for him because he takes half hour longer than anyone else!

My sons was from sports direct, in the main section there's a divide, only 2 sections but may help. There's also a smaller pocket for his pencil case/calculator then a slightly bigger 1 he keeps his school planner & snack in.

Colour code is time table and and cover his books with the same colour. He can look at timetable see maths is red and he can then reach for his red book.
