Planting in Gravely Soil of Raised Flower Bed – Do We Need to Remove Stones or Improve Soil? Plus, Best Summer Flowers Recommendations

For the sunny bed I thought euphorbia at the back lime green,
With wallflowers purple and heuchra some rosemary lavender and hebes all the colours of those and also a really lovely scented english rose and for the shady side helebores. And where ok for something sprawling some crocosmia. Maybe a pieiris. Plant some bulbs in October too clusters of different spring time things to peak through to April May so snowdrops, grape hyacinths, crocuses, irises, nascissi, then on to daffodils and tulips. All of these things if you plant based on what they like shade etc will come back every year. They also give colour and interest throughout the year because they have lovely foliage and they are what I call faithful…. They grow in to your space and fill it nicely and apart from
The huchera they don’t get eaten by slugs.
I do treat myself to buying just a few marigolds like you have and some lobelia… lovely but they die so I see they are a luxury … and I buy them in moderation. I should really grown from seed but … nah lols . Next year look at your gaps - acers are lovely near to a fence as they don’t like wind. They like different soil type so you could have on in a pot?
Anyhow enjoy establishing your garden.

We have created a raised flower bed. I love gardening but wouldn't say Im Experience. You need to be aware of how the sun falls in this space for example we have one side which is shady so i have grown hostas, ferns, huchea (not sure how u spell it) so it has more of a jungle vibe... and the other sunny side has sun loving plants like lupins, allium, foxglove erysimum they come in all different colours, aswell as an erray of spring bulbs like tulips and daffodils, iris, geraniums. Gladiolis, To gather all different colours and textures. I use multi purpose compost when I plant mine and they seem to thrive on that.. and then feed every couple of weeks in growing season.

@bendowsky aah thank you... the hostas die back in the winter but they start growing back in Feb... they come out like a crown of pointy fingers... its fascinating to watch... but I love the contrast of the jungle side to the summer side.... then along the back I have a rose Bush geraniums esyiums, a buddleigh Bush which I have shaped into a tree than hangs over and looks really pretty when the flowers are on show and thats in the corner and 2 ceanosus (can't spell it)... but a everygreen Bush with beautiful blue flower buds. And mint, iris's and more spring g bulbs.

Dahlias are lovely and grow every year. If you go on gardeners world website they are great at explaining what types of plants grow where and how. It's my go to when I'm planting.

My other half is professional RHS trained gardener, whereas I had no gardenning experience at all when we met (other than mow it, cut it, kill it) Other than dont touch my plants 😆 his 2 top tips to people are normally..
Plant in 3's
Add structure with different plants
Have fun 👍

Get some more compost and a deep layer of manure. Its Mazing the goodness it does and how much it drops. I've gone for perennials not bought a plant this year yet. Swap cutting with neighbours. We have some great gardeners in our street. These are fab - look after themselves . Picked them up a few years ago from the garden centre. They have taken over a bit so I'm going have to be confident and split and share.
