Off-the-Beaten-Path Vacation Ideas: Hidden Gems and Unique Destinations

The north of Hungary has some gorgeous little towns, Eger has a great castle, some lovely little shops and a water park, as well as a valley full of wine caves with gypsy bands playing on a Saturday night. The food and accommodation is normally amazing (we have been a few times) for what you pay!
The other side of Budapest you have lake Balaton, we stayed in Siofok a couple of times and it’s a bit of a party town in middle of summer but there are some lovely little lakeside spots (there’s no coast so the lake is great for swimming and boat trips etc).
It’s all fairly well served by railways, you do have to be a bit adventurous and of course I haven’t been for about 7 years so things may be slightly different but it’s one of my favourite countries ever!

I love Banff, Canada. The temperatures can be extreme though, -37 in Winter, high 30s in Summer. I fondly remember my jeans sticking to my legs and my nostrils freezing! Stunning scenery more than compensates for a little cold or heat.

Austria in the summer is vv beautiful and warm. Swim in lakes. Lots of history - Mozart, palaces, sound of music. Beautiful scenery.
Trains seem fine.
Albania - tourism is picking up!

@spokken2 about to go and stay at Lake Bohinj following being in Ljubljana. Will be visiting Bled. Lots of stuff to do, very family friendly and the countryside is beautiful.

Bavaria! We either drive down over 2 days or fly to Munich and car hire. We also love Switzerland, public transport around the places to visit is easier than Bavaria but it’s a lot lot more expensive

Poland - it's a big country, with lots of places to visit. Tourists usually go to Kraków, Auschwitz, Warsaw, Gdańsk, Tatry mountains but there are many other beautiful or unusual places in Poland to see: Wrocław, Poznań, Toruń, Łódź, Malbork, Sandomierz, Kazimierz, Zamość, Lublin, Białowieża, Biskupin, Bieszczady mountains, Beskidy mountains, Sudety mountains, Pieniny mountains, Mazury (Polish lake district), Balic coast. The list is endless.
