Off-the-Beaten-Path Vacation Ideas: Hidden Gems and Unique Destinations

We are currently in Bulgaria Bansko (just bout to fly home 😢) we’ve had an amazing time found loads to do (altho you would need car hire) it’s so beautiful out here weather has been perfect not too hot we will defo be coming back

Romania (specifically Sighisoara in Transylvania) is absolutely stunning - gorgeous scenery and very cheap. The cakes are to die for - lovely patisseries - and the food is good too (though a lot of grilled meats and fish and stews so perhaps not great for veggies/vegans). It was a few years ago now since I visited so that may have changed. Also Hungary - Budapest is a stunning city and like all European cities extremely child friendly. We’re heading to Nice this summer - not off the beaten track but lots for children to do and not your typical package holiday. I’ve got some great ideas and inspiration for future trips from this thread!

Portugal (not algarve) it has the most beautiful places to visit, Sintra, Mafra, Cascais, Sesimbra, Porto, Coimbra, Evora, Alentejo, so many absolutely stunning places and everyone goes to algarve which is an overpriced overrated tourist destination where you'll find nothing but tourists.

@marijancica I was looking at this too BUT I noticed that you can wait up to 6 hours to get a boat across - I didn’t fancy it with the kids in tow!! I’d be interested in knowing if you’ve heard the same thing??

@marijancica trouble with that is you’d have to fly to Tenerife in order to get the ferry from Los Cristianos. Flights to Tenerife are not cheap anytime of the year so kind of defeats the OPs intention of little unknown places to keep costs down.

Not been but would like to- the Albanian Rivera. Apparently the best way to get there is to fly to Corfu and then get a 30 mins ferry over. There is talk of International Airport being built close by soon so prices and tourism will most likely increase( the current nearest airport is 3-4hrs away)

We went to Montenegro as a family of 5 last year. Kids age 12, 4 and 8 months. Beautiful beautiful scenery. We'd been to the Amalfi coast a couple years prior and I think the scenery in Montenegro is on par. We might brave Albania when we can. Think this place was called Risan x
