How to Begin Decluttering Your Home: Tips for Keeping Things Organized

Be ruthless. It’s hard but it’s worth it. I saw this challenge where on the 1st of the month you get rid of one thing, 2nd you get rid of 2, 3rd you get rid of 3… and so on. It makes it easier for those who can’t just delve in and throw loads away at once xx

Start in a room and make 4 piles: KEEP. SELL. CHARITY SHOP. BIN. Be ruthless and everything will fall into one of those categories. If you’ve kept something ‘just in case’ (my husband does this and it drives me mad!) and there hasn’t been a need for it in 6 months then it needs to go into one of the categories.
Another rule I have which works is that everything must have a home. If you want something badly enough, you’ll find it a home even if it means something else has to go as a result.
If it’s kids rooms get them involved as it helps them build skills as to how to declutter and keep things organised.

You already have lots of tips above which I’d echo. But also to add, Facebook Marketplace is a great place to sell times without occurring fees like you do with eBay. I’d start bagging up clothes that no longer fit, shoes and household items you no longer love and get those to the charity shop. Once you have more space it will be easier to organise everything remaining. And maybe arrange a skip, depending on how much rubbish you have. Xx

Think about if you were moving house - what would you really pack and get rid off. Also if not used in last year you are not going to use. Good luck

I have a 3 month rule, if I haven’t used it and it’s not essential it goes.
I have a clear out of each room every few months. Do a declutter jar, write all the rooms/spaces that need decluttering and pull one out once a week for now until you e done every room. But you have to be a bit roofless otherwise you’ll never get to a decluttered platform to start again if you like. The first one is the hardest. Xx

In the book the life changing magic of tidying up ( or something like that) she gets you to get all your same items together to sort instead of going room by room, so you could do books, all books from all over the house into one place and then sort. That way you don’t miss anything. You go the same with clothes, shoes, etc

I would do one room at a time on a nice day put it all in the garden if you have 1 then only take back in what you need I'm waiting for summer

That could be me writing every single word you’ve written!
I know most of my problem is keeping stuff and adding more.
I’m currently working hard on decluttering my craft room of decades of craft stuff. It’s really hard. But some advice I got helped a bit.
Rather then deciding what your getting rid of which is quite overwhelming think only of what are you going to keep? It’s easier somehow.
Good luck!

I watch extreme hoarders and tell myself if you don't declutter that will be me! I think it's a dual problem ..get rid of what you don't need and don't buy more stuff. We introduced a one in one out rule, which has helped us. I also don't try and tackle everything in one go. I will do one draw, one box, etc much more manageable and easier to do. I still have loads to get rid of.

If you haven’t used it in 6 months Chuck it or sell it … do one room at a time and while doing the other rooms don’t put anything back into the already done room xx

Start with one room, which is what I’m doing &
Selling everything we don’t need
Hoping to move in the next 18m-2 years so no choice. We’ve filled the house,
