TLC Tips for First Home: From Bathrooms to Banisters and Everything In-Between!

We're in the last stages of a house extension. It gets very overwhelming and is very stressful. This is my second big extension (the last one we put up for rent). What I learnt is to stick to what you love and not be too distracted by trends. And I'm trying to get the best of what our budget can afford in the room we will be spending the most time in as family (ie kitchen/dining). All the best.

Definitely live in the space for a bit before you start doing anything too major! I always thought that I wanted a fully open plan house... When I saw the tumble weeds of dog hair blowing from one side of the room to the other I thought 'Do you know what, it would be nice to have one room at least that was shut off and hair free should anyone come round' 🤣

@godschild8713 omg yes! We have a husky so his hair is just..... EVERYWHERE. A humble door won't stop it but I totally get what you mean! Open plan does look so lovely doesn't it, but I do like the option to have a cosy lounge-type space so learning to have patience before taking my stress out on walls is definitely a good idea! 😁 thank you!

@woofiedog at the risk of sounding like Kirsty Allsop then pan drawers in your kitchen not cupboards- they are a game changer !
Hope your move goes smoothly & enjoy making happy memories in your new home 😁

@jabin Thank you so much for your kind words!! Do you know what, it's so true! I love the idea of open shelving on the walls where I'll pop a few bits but definitely pan drawers yes! Otherwise they're such a faff to store aren't they! Also the much needed plastic container drawer 😂

Plastic skirting board from eurocell....game change no glossing or cutting corners as all purchasable. Low maintenence is was to go.

@smile4jesus Great advice, and that means get EVERYTHING for that room, as in curtains, cushions, decor etc before moving onto the next room.... Good luck. Take your time and take time out to enjoy it too. 🥰🤞🏼😊 xxx

@dj7 definitely! I did up a 3 bed place and never started on the next room til the one I was working on was completely finished, carpet, curtains furniture etc.
I did give in for the last room and gave my builder a list of the jobs to do......all I had to do then was paint and hang curtains 😅

Start with upstairs first and work down. Lots of planning. Bathrooms first as will need flooring up for all plumbing etc. Do one room at a time and shop around for everything and don’t be afraid to ask for discounts! We are 2 years in on a full renovation project. Still got rooms unfinished!

One room at a time. If kitchen and bathroom are functional, do them later as they are the most expensive. Do things like living and bedroom first so you have some where to relax and chill at the end of a stressful day. Congratulations and good luck in your new home x

I agree I felt the same , one room at a time so you can think about what you really want , one in your house you will get used to it not being perfect and have comfort in the rooms that are getting done , good luck 🙂
