Ring Bought on Etsy Turns Out to Be Fake - Seller Refusing Refund, What Are My Options?

@betron my engagement ring is also a lab ruby but that tested positive on the same machine unlike these stones. I also paid extra for the moissanite which also showed up fake.

It’s not fair to slag off Etsy because of one individual, not everyone is a crook!! Like someone else said, take it on the chin and learn from your naïveté. The stress isn’t worth it! If u know the seller u could warn other people x

You have 100 days to contest a purchase on Etsy. After that you can try a charge back with your card provider.
However, as Etsy is a "handmade" (or vintage) marketplace you are unlikely to get quality markings or pure stones.

@tchew this is rubbish, I’m a jeweller and I know a lot of jewellers who sell their work on Etsy and only use genuine diamonds and gemstones and hallmark their work because they are legally obliged to do so! 🤦🏻‍♀️
Just because something is handmade doesn’t mean it is of lesser quality! In fact it is more likely to be of better quality!!

@fhf1 no we don’t but comments about buying ‘handmade’ and not likely to get real stones or hallmarks really annoys me because it’s small independent jewellers who rely on Etsy for their livelihoods being thrown into the same category as mass produced chinese imported crap that is somehow being allowed on Etsy (whose whole original ethos was selling handmade, vintage and craft products)
There is so much rubbish on their that genuine businesses have to fight so hard to get themselves seen and trusted that comments like the one above don’t help.

@tsue I buy from a Japanese statue maker who makes custom marvel statues they are handmade and have a stamp but the we are not buying then cause they are handmade or a stamp its because no one can't touch her quality the detail it's unheard of on the mobile device had a picture of my dog in such detail so small
That's why we go to esty the personal touch in an impersonal world

@tsue Etsy do not quality check or validate any of the products they allow to be sold on their platform. They will step in if there is a problem, but it's hit and miss if a seller is trustworthy and reliable, that's the reason for their feedback and star seller system.

@tchew I agree, there needs to be some form of screening of who can sell but that would stop them making money.
I mean there’s people selling bottles of Prime drink on there 🤦🏻‍♀️😡
Your original comment though implied that ‘handmade’ means lesser quality which it doesn’t. The lesser quality items on Etsy are the mass produced crap being incorrectly listed as handmade.

Tbh you have left it too late unfortunately. There is nothing to say that this is the same ring that you were sent. You unfortunately had a responsibility to check that you had what was advertised when it arrived.
Unfortunately this is one to be put down to experience.

Get a second opinion- I’ve had problems finding a jeweller who I trust to repair my engagement ring - without even looking at it I’m being told it’s a cubic zirconia because apparently there’s no such thing as a pink sapphire 🙄 I know mine is a genuine pink sapphire and yes there is such a thing!!

@myster of course there is! My engagement ring is pink sapphire and diamonds. It was recently at a jewellers to be reshanked (think that’s the right term). I had a certificate of authenticity already but I asked for another one from the jeweller along with proof of value and it was no issue to them at all and I have everything I need. My pink sapphire is most definitely “real”.
The jeweller you went to sounds like a tit 😂
Hope you find someone lovely to repair yours x

@myster pink sapphires definitely exist! In fact they are one of the rarest colours. I have a pink sapphire and diamond engagement ring, and then pink sapphire and diamond earrings to match (my wedding present!).
I’ve found a lot of jewellers are ‘scared’ to work on them but it’s possible!
