Ring Bought on Etsy Turns Out to Be Fake - Seller Refusing Refund, What Are My Options?

@dipsydoodle I wouldn't care but it's the price that's the problem and the fact that others who may care will also end up scammed. And the fact someone is profiting from dishonesty!! How is that acceptable?!

@jordansa I understand that and yes it is totally unacceptable, I agree. But unfortunately getting it checked so late is a risk. I am not saying its your fault but what did the listing say? Did it say it was hallmarked and had genuine stones?

@dipsydoodle yes it says lab created rubies, moissanite and 925 sterling silver but all coming up negative with a testing machine. My engagement ring uses a lab ruby too which showed positive on the same machine

I would contact you bank's fraud dept and talk to them. I know if you purchase through VISA then they will refund you. Family member bought ring in India using VISA. On return home the stone came out. Visa refunded her.

At the very least you can probably leave them a horrible review.
If they have any social media I'd post there too

Before anyone says it, my engagement ring is a lab ruby (which I love!!) and showed up positive on the test whereas his lab rubies did not so that doesn't affect the testing. I paid extra for the moissanite not CZ and that came up negative too

@jordansa sorry if this has been answered or said but I always thought CZ and moissanite were classed as the same. Both lab grown and not diamonds.
Was it a test for diamonds or is there a specific one for moissanite? And again sorry if this has been asked and answered.

@seekingwisdom723 lab grown are the same composition as natural diamond and will show up as such. CZ and moissanite are 100% different. The test was for moissanite, not diamond, as I was never under the impression it was diamond

@jordansa yes. This is quite vague. States Ruby in the title. Your partner may have just read the title and bought. Tbh, Etsy make it really hard to find where the description is too. For £80 you probably paying more the hours put in to make it, vs quality of stones. I do get why you are frustrated however.

Hi lovely I'm a jeweller (silversmith/goldsmith)
If the silver weighs less than 7.78 grams, which it most likely does, then it falls within the exemption weight and doesn't legally require hallmarking. However we are required to display our dealer notices in print if in a physical shop and online too, so my website shows mine, does the seller display a notice (if they are UK based they need to)
In terms of the stones I would get a second opinion from another independent jeweller.
The problem you have here is the time frame for the returns period has passed also did the other jewellers resize the ring? If they made any alterations without you returning to the original maker that would too pose a problem.
One option you would have is to see if you had a legal case for the stones. You need to weigh up the costs, how much was the ring compared to how much it would cost you to take it further etc
Sorry you have had a terrible experience hope you get it sorted soon. If you have any questions I can help with feel free to ask x

@catholiclutheran thank you for such a detailed reply! Really appreciate it. Luckily nothing has been changed about it as the jeweller tested the stones first and notified me immediately. I think I am just going to have to cut my losses though as I have left it too long unfortunately. Lesson learned - check things when they arrive! I didn't have any doubt - it was just the jeweller's standard procedure to check their authenticity and that's how I discovered it. I would just like others not to fall victim to it but I have no way of leaving a review for some reason which is a shame! Thank you for your help xxx

@jordansa most welcome lovely. It is such a shame you can't leave a review. Theres a likelihood that potentially this maker has purchased his stones from somewhere there isn't reputable, he could have been mis sold to. Its a shame he hasn't taken the opportunity to provide a better customer service, he could have looked into his stone supplier and taken some investigations his side. He could have dealt with the situation alot better.
Congratulations on the upcoming wedding lovely, hope you find a ring that you love even more xx
