Navigating ADHD Diagnosis and Social Challenges for Teen Son

@heartoflogicthey moved away from the term Asperger’s because the doctor it is named after used some dubious methods and it confused people that it might be more acceptable. It was always autism and as a spectrum each individual experience is unique.

@soundwords depends what clinic you go to obviously, the one we went to certainly referred to Asperger’s and when I said it wasn’t diagnosed anymore assured me it was, so I’ll go with their assurance.

@heartoflogic fair enough x I was told not to use that term and actually I have used three clinics for each of my sons and we were all ASD and all three clinicians explained the spectrum and why the older terms like Asperger’s are no longer used x in any case it’s def what all three of us would have been classed as in the past

@heartoflogicsorry, it’s because you said your son had Asperger’s which confused me as it isn’t termed that now. The comment was to add info for those in the thread and I didn’t mean it to be solely for you, sorry again

@scenario he does have Asperger’s, it is very much termed that by some places, the clinic said some people didn’t use the name but it is still a diagnosis, they referred to it as Asperger’s the whole time we were there

@heartoflogicthat surprises me as the way Asperger defined people was whether they were worthy of living or going to the gas chambers during nazi occupation. His main definition was if people were verbal or not. We now know it is far more complex than that and that people can’t be defined as high functioning by how they appear to be functioning because they could be really struggling, hence why high functioning is not recommended to be used. It can prevent people getting the help they need if they are seen as high functioning.

Yes thanks for this, I have all this, but the clinic that diagnosed my son use the term and used it the whole time we were there. I’m aware of all the info on it thank you for feeling the need to post links to it, I am going with what doctors diagnosed my son with. Please move on to other posts now I won’t be reading anymore, it’s hard enough dealing with this whatever it’s called so that’s enough thank you.

No advise but I feel you . My son last night decided to call an act crap and cheat a very talented young musician and I felt like I wanted the world to swallow me . They don’t get it I know . My son is nine I’m not sure entirley but it’s worrying me too x

Hopefully over time the people that matter will learn that this is just the way he is
My son is 11 and has adhd and has always very much spoken his mind
It can be awkward but we are mostly used to it now
Like he would grab my dads chin/ neck and say it’s so wobbly
Or grab my legs and say they are jiggly
We just try and explain to him how certain things may hurt people’s feeling but when you get to know him he actually is a very kind boy
