World Book Day: It's About Encouraging Reading, Not Costume Competitions!

My son is ADHD/ASD. The thought of wearing a costume is a no no for him, he picked a t-shirt - and that was that!
I've never been one of those parents and I'm cool with that - I love watching other parents creations too!
We all choose where our time goes and I agree - it doesn't matter how you do it!
Same with Easter/Christmas/birthdays.
We're all unique and neither is right nor wrong! 🥰

Absolutely love this!
I was never a mum who needed or wanted to spend days making a costume, quick trip to a supermarket and job done 😂
My child was reading Harry Potter by the time she was 6, and Enid blyton by the time she was 4.5/5 years old!
It’s about creating a love of books!
Thank god she is in senior school now and we don’t have to dress up for these events 😂
Ps - once after a 60 hour working week I tried to stick some ribbon to a basket to go with a little ted riding hood costume…..I superglued my dressing gown and the ribbon on the floor and nothing stuck to the basket 😂 it’s ok not to be crafty or care to dots about being the most creative! Lol

Child one his sloth jumper and jeans ( he went as a sloth)
Child two Halloween cat costume
Child three has additional needs would care a bat but sent her into school in her pjs ..
That was my contribution to WBD

Our kid's school is amazingly inclusive and they did optional PJs instead of costumes for a Big Bedtime story day. Really fun for the kids and no pressure or hassle for children or parents

I absolutely agree and I do cheap second-hand brought costumes (£2 on a preloved HP cape & accessories + £4 for wand and glasses) which will now go into his dressing up box for him and his younger brother to enjoy for a few more years.
I personally love looking at and admiring the arts & crafts skill and time spent of the elaborate home made costumes. I think rather them than me 🤣

My two wanted to go as footballers. I told them as long as they had the kit to match a book and had read the book then that was fine.

I didnt spend a week, I spent 20 mins making a paper hat because the one from Amazon never arrived but I had a happy kid lol
My daughter who won first price was dora the explorer, shorts and tshirt that we already had and a backpack.. sorted, nothing extravagant in my house 😂

Our headteacher thought the WBD message was being lost, so the kids don’t dress up. They take in their current favourite book and discuss with the class. X

Don't understand why people get so upset or "feel inadequate" about it. I had one child who we worked very hard at making a homemade outfit which we were extremely proud of. Although got some right horrible comments from this page 😂 and then two other children who went in their own clothes because they didn't want to take part, and that is fine! There are years where we haven't done anything but i absolutely LOVE seeing everybody's home made outfits. Always has to be some people to suck the fun out of everything!
