World Book Day: It's About Encouraging Reading, Not Costume Competitions!

I dont understand people who get so butt hurt over it to be honest, if people want to present their achievements then why is it seen as showing off? I personally can't do crafts etc to save my life but I love seeing other people's creations, they arent show boating or trying to one up people they are just proud. I don't understand why it became such a negative thing to do.

@mike70 I was actually inspired by the Wall-e costume on here. Thinking maybe I can do that next year. It’s just a cardboard box painted. Simple, yet so effective 😊

@mike70 exactly... its a shame we are now living in a world we're you can't be proud of yourself for managing to do something or buy something because someone else can't afford it!
What happened to be grateful for what you have as there is always someone worse off. Xxxx

@mike70 she’s more aiming the post at people who felt inadequate! I think most people enjoy reading others’ amazing stories but sometimes it could make people feel like they’re not enough for their children and that we should all be doing that.
I think a good balance is healthy but how often do we see “I was a rubbish mum today” posts? It’s easy to get upset and lost in what is essentially people’s highlight reels! ❤️

@mike70 exactly this! I enjoy looking at other people's achievements and celebrating it. I cannot understand why everything has become an issue? I suppose their will be issues when Easter and school holidays etc come around as you always see these posts.

@mike70 yeah same, the way it’s worded ‘yay me’ is it not ok to celebrate ourselves anymore without being accused of being insensitive or something lol xx

@mike70 I think it’s important to remember that everyone is coming to this group with a different history, ideas about themselves, different pressures, mental health and so on. There’s no harm in a post like this every so often, reminding people that it’s not all about the costume, or allowing others a place to say “Yes! Me too. I feel bad that I can’t do that.”

@mike70 I don’t think she was having any kind of go at those who enjoy it and are good at doing costumes - she said she commends them for it. She was trying to encourage those who struggle - and that was really helpful for me.

^ agree with Lucy. I don’t think it’s saying don’t share / celebrate those parenting wins, successes or creative moments. I think it’s far more that there are parents out there who cannot afford / don’t have time or money / or like me have absolutely no skills in being that creative 😄. For those parents there are times you may feel like wow that parent is smashing it and I’m barely even average. So I guess she’s trying to remind everyone don’t measure on those things. Not having a dig at creative mums etc.

I have a peacock son, he loves to show everyone his feathers and I think it’s a marvellous thing!
I love seeing people really chuffed with their creations, achievements, goals achieved.
There’s a poem by Marianne Williamson, she got it spot on!

@mike70 agreed. I absolutely love making costumes for my daughter. 9 times out of 10 everything we have done is with stuff from around the house or a charity shop, cardboard and the food old trusty glue gun. It's now become a thing with the other parents that I will always "out do" them and honestly it makes me feel so uncomfortable. I'm not doing anything but making a costume. Most are done the night before and are far from perfect but they are always my daughter's designs and she enjoys helping me with them. I'm excited to start doing them for my son when he starts school soon. X

Our school don’t do costumes and asked us to make a story in a jar.. I didn’t 🤷🏼‍♀️ my son took his fave book in and had a fab day!

My boys went in football kit based on the books Marcus Rashford "little kids, big dreams" and "the boy with the lightening feet. My daughter went as the white rabbit from Alice in wonderland but literally looked nothing like it. I don't have the time, energy, funds or resources to anything elaborate and yes I felt like a sh*t parent. But they were happy so I'm happy.

Karen Goodman I thought I did amazing this year! Jack went in his England tracksuit AND it was clean - I’m such Mum goals 😂
World book day is officially done for my lifetime 🥳🥳
