World Book Day: It's About Encouraging Reading, Not Costume Competitions!

So glad I'm out of the competitive parenting tbh. I feel for those that dread non-uniform days whether that be for financial or other reasons.

I have a kid who doesn’t do dress up and luckily our school said everyone come in pjs or whatever clothes you want to wear and take your favourite book! I have neither the time or the energy for making costumes and I would not buy for world boom day but everyone is different and some people enjoy making costumes and things I’m just not that mum!! But I certainly love seeing everyone’s efforts and thinking if only I could be bothered/have the creative thoughts etc 😂😂

World book day isn’t about parent shaming it’s about kids having fun dressing up and enjoying books. Our school said dress up, non uniform and pjs lots of options 🙂 I bought a costume didn’t make as not creative enough lol
No one was bothered who was wearing what. Our school had the author of a book come in and she had a great day x

I sat up many nights for hours trying to make my daughter a dress and massively failed. I ended up having to buy one last minute. I don’t hold any resentment, I love to see people’s creations. I personally love that they get to dress up for world book day even if it’s just in their pjs or as a colour, a lot of schools don’t let them dress up and sadly it’s because of comments like this.

And on the other hand, if you are proud
of your childs costume, whether it's made or bought or just because your little one looks so cute...it is absolutely fine to want to share them with the world. Don't be put off by posts like this guilting you that you are doing something wrong by being proud of your little ones.

Exactly. Posts on this group feel like barely disguised gloating sometimes.
I mean, surely WBD should be about reading? It feels like it takes a back seat to dress up.

@gregmonroe agreed. It doesn’t matter what everyone does. I don’t really care but not sure why people feel the need to post it in groups on FB. If they want to share on their own page then fine, but why on a huge group full of strangers? It’s like bragging. It’s really odd to me.

The school I work at (and where my son goes) had world book Day, but people didn't have to come in costume. You could choose to just wear casual clothes. I let my 3 year old choose his favourite book, which was about a dog, so put him in brown and white clothes and painted a dog nose on his face with my eyeliner. And stuck 2 bits of felt to a hairband. Didn't cost me a cent and he was so happy.
Honestly I like the "no hard and fast rules" book Day.
Honestly as a person who works at a school, world book Day is by far my favourite costume day. Even if it was just a bit of face paint, the kids really got into character and were so eager to talk about their favourite books. Maybe we can look at this from the kids perspective. It's about imagination not an elaborate costume. It's about encouraging people to read actual books, not just a competition on who can make other people laugh on Instagram.

I visited a school for a meeting last week & staff & children came dressed in what they feel comfortable reading in, most people had on pj’s or joggers - great idea & no pressure! Heard it on bbc radio too, love it!

I wanted my two to dress up for world book day but they both told me to ef off.
Not a bad parent. They're just typical 18 n 19year olds 😜🤪😝🤣🤣🤣

Our school invited the children to wear a costume but they recognised that not everyone has the means to organise a costume or may not want to wear one and they could just wear their own clothes instead

I didn’t even get a picture of him in his shop bought costume that he lost the tail to at school. Big mum fail over here and I couldn’t give a $h*t, all 5 of my children are fed, clean and kept warm that’s what matters.
