World Book Day: It's About Encouraging Reading, Not Costume Competitions!

@butch79 our school do world book day a day or two after everyone else as they know parents struggle and that way they can get cheap or borrow as it's on a different day. You could suggest this to your school? Xx

Our school had open options of costume,pj's or non uniform. Our 3 all said pj's then youngest decided 6pm night before he wanted a costume so raided his wardrobe, toy box and got the hair chalk out, printed labels for his bucket and Harry and his bucket full of dinosaurs, cost nothing took 10 mins and he was happy 😊

Our school had activities that involved zero costumes and you know what the children were absolutely fine about it and the parents could breathe a sigh of relief

I asked my son 'do you want to dress up for world book day?' He said 'No'. Happy days.....🤣 Yet another year has passed and we didnt bother 🤣

My son went in his Minecraft bits that he got for his bday lol, he's a sen child so dressing up isn't his thing but still likes to take part, mine craft top and jumper did him well 🙂

Sounds more like you have a chip on your shoulder about other parents & their children's costumes tbh. I absolutely love seeing everyone's costumes, whether they're elaborate or not & never did I think I was a shit parent because of the fact I bought an outfit from asda. Sounds more like a you problem, world book day comes round every year & pitting parents against each other isn't the way to deal with how you feel about it.

@sorter agreed! I didn't even buy a costume but mixed and matched from clothes I already have and then drew some stuff with eyeliner. My kids couldn't have been happier and I literally don't care if anything or anyone was judging me because for me, encouraging kids to read and talk about their favourite book is the whole idea of book Day!

@mcdoc is she? Or is it a lack of imagination and realising that no one gives 2 shits what other parents do. What she is forgetting is that it's not about the parents, it's about the kids. They don't need a fancy costume.
