World Book Day: It's About Encouraging Reading, Not Costume Competitions!

To be fair it came across to me that the post was trying to reassure parents who were not in a position to make or buy costumes not to criticise those who did.

I know a fair amount of kids that just went in their own clothes, they still donated and the day was still about books and reading. It doesn’t matter what they wear.

Very grateful our school doesn't do costumes anymore, mainly for financial reasons and reducing pressure on parents.
They instead do fun activities and base the whole day on actual books, reading and games. It's all so hyped up. Every day should be a book day
But It's become a pissing competition for some parents. 9 times out of 10 the kids are dressed up as characters they don't even know about! They certainly haven't read the book. It really makes me eye roll now
my son came home super excited to tell me about everything they did that day. He was buzzing! No costume needed.

I started my daughters the night before cost £3 for a bag for her balls we used her sisters old top and I drew on it cut bits super glued them to it used bag handles as belts was so worried it wasn't a brought one like others but she actually got 1st place in her year

I know people who sent kids in pjs or uniform or didn't send them each to there own x

My daughter's school had to choose an 'ambitious word' to dress up as and design a board with their word and definition. She's reading (and really enjoying) Harry Potter, so she went as Hermione and her word was mysterious. School uniform with a cloak, wand, gryffindor scarf and headband that she got for Christmas. We even braided her hair the night before so it was all wavy in the morning. Her board was made with an amazon box and paints from our craft cupboard. No extra money spent here

I agree, great if you can/ want to but personally this year the posts were constant. I didn’t have the time/ money or energy this year and then they themed it to a theme my kids had no interest in so they went in comfortable non uniform and I explained he had come as a 7yr old boy who likes reading and his teacher smiled. We read together and he likes reading and we went to the shop and used the vouchers
