Excessive Holiday Homework: Is This Normal? Need to Vent About My Son's English Teacher

@forumangel I sometimes think people don;t realise how much hard work goes into helping these kids through their exams. Whether they be high achievers or SEND (I cover both aspects in my family) it is a team effort between parents, school and students. So many people playing the blame culture these days but not prepared to join the team.

My year 7 son has got 4 pieces set already and still one day to go for any more to be added. I hate it. It should be a time for them to have a break not do more homework. Especially after 2 weeks of exams they have just done.

My daughter is on year 8. She had revisions over half term and always have home work 3-4 pieces per week and sparks maths online. She gets on with it as it’s all practice and the tests after half term are the bases of what sets she will get in in year 9. We don’t think its a big deal however if she’s given a choice she rather not do it.
Saying that I can see how overwhelming it all can get for your son.

My daughters in year 9 she’s gets homework she chooses not to do it I ain’t gonna make her do it her choice if she has to deal with consequences

I agree. It is unfair to set homework for the holidays but fine parents for taking them away in term time. The message from fining parents is you need to take them away in the holidays, but they need to take homework with them 🤷

Our school has given out lots of revision work for assessments on their return.. Got to be done or detentions given.

I always spent my holidays doing homework. God help when he starts his GCSEs and has to do assignments over breaks as these will count towards his final marks!

School holidays are my time to spend with my Grandchildren while they parents work. I am not doing homework with them. Glad you got it sorted. Kids need holidays just like adults 😍😍

I do hope that all the parents who are refusing to allow their children to learn during the holidays have some amazing real life learning opportunities lined up for them.

Just a question… will you be complaining to the school if they don’t get the results you think they deserve? I would take all the time/help where I could seeing the kids have been thru Covid/strikes etc… but hey, that’s me! A few hours work remaining on top of things may build resilience for what’s ahead??

@trularue no his grades are absolutely down to him at the end of the day, and I have advised him that if he chooses not to do the homework that it could effect his grade, the same lecture I give him when he digs his heels in about termtime homework. But I also know that if he’s burnt out and not getting a reasonable break from school then his grade will suffer anyway.

My daughter always has homework and if she doesn’t we encourage her to do some study. Sets them up for their exams later on in school.

My son has had to go in for extra A level revision days during the last 2 holiday breaks and again next week in half term. I applaud the teachers taking their time ( I know its paid) to give the children an extra boost. My now Year 9 gets homework during the holidays. Nothing wrong with spending an hour here and there for a bit of school work. In my opinion, after all the lockdowns and Covid, it won't do them any harm.

My kids always get homework due ater school holidays. The youngest isnt required but encouraged and the other going into gcse work so its kinda important. Its alright by me because even in holiday time i have to work or do household things
