Excessive Holiday Homework: Is This Normal? Need to Vent About My Son's English Teacher

@stephanie08918 oh believe me my kids have responsibilities . All I'm saying is homework in holidays is not a must ,it's a time to have a break ,exactly like wen us adults go on holiday we don't cook./clean etc we use our hard earned money from our jobs to pay for these luxuries because we can ... in my.opinion homework is not a tool for managing responsibility it's learning and my children r able to do this without putting pen to paper thru everyday life .

the 1 good thing my 2boys secondary school do is no homework in holidays...im not big homeowrk fan anyway (they in school 4 enough hours of the day so 2 me home should be there own time)

Wait until they get to years 10 and 11 and they are being set hours and hours of revision homework in readiness for their GCSEs. Even during their GCSEs this last fortnight they are being set work to help them with their revision.
I totally understand about how hard it is to get some kids to do homework (two with ADHD here who battle it sometimes) but it helps to cement in their learning, helps to teach them about self-control and independent learning and really does benefit them in the long run (in my opinion).

Think it's a great idea tbh. So many holidays and kids find it hard to get back into routine of doing things after long breaks x

Son was given 20 pages of maths and 20pages to do of english(yr6) in Easter hols. We done it last 2 days for ages and he took it to school when went back and guess what, it's all still in his school bag, no one handed in, weren't asked for it. Was totally unnecessary. I'm not against homework but holidays are holidays not home study days

A few years ago my sons art teacher sent him 21 pieces of homework to complete over the 6 weeks holiday, a few others also sent work too so I was fuming. We are not allowed to inflict our holiday during their teaching time but they can inflict teaching during our holidays. Needless to say he didn’t complete it and instead learnt about different cultures, cooking, family time, fun diy and plenty of play and chill time.

I think it's pretty standard to set homework over the holidays tbf. I think they should have a break too but it happened when I was at school and it happens now with the kids x

Two paragraphs is half a page roughly so not a massive amount to be honest. His workload will only increase throughout school and he needs fo learn to time manage. Maybe just ask the teacher how much time they expect to be spent on each assignment and then if your child is spending considerably more time than that, look at why that is and see what can be done about that.

Wait till gcse exams my daughter got to go in for 3 days for revision sessions and my 2 boys have both got homework to do over rhe holidays and if it's not handed in they get a detention

@forumangel My daughter has been in immersion since the exams started - in school every day as per usual. They also did teams revision on the last two Sundays. My daughter wouldn't miss it because she is that kind of kid who will be taking her revision away for half term for the two weeks of exams she has when she gets back.
