Excessive Holiday Homework: Is This Normal? Need to Vent About My Son's English Teacher

I don't make my son do any homework during the holidays I don't agree with it as you've said holidays r just that, that is my child's time 2 be a kid and do what he wants and also spend time as a family, I also don't agree with homework 2 a certain degree yes it probably does help them but also they've just been at school for 6 hrs a day learning give them a great my son gets homework every single day weres his time to unwind.

You say it took ‘us’ three days to do. It’s your son’s homework. Make him take ownership. Teachers are damned if they do (set work) and damned if they don’t!

@fengqiwu2011 while I do agree with you that it’s my sons homework, he has required SEND support throughout his education (which he’s never received while being in secondary school) and that does mean he needs my support which work he has at home. I don’t sit there doing it for him by no means, but he just needs help. It still doesn’t mean that he should be doing work at home though?

If he is under sen support I wouldn’t be overloading him .. do you know his learning levels and I would meet the senco and see where that send support is ? If he’s on the sen register reasonable adjustments must be made xx

@joseph30 I don;t help my kids with their homework - not because I can't be bothered but because they are far brighter than me 😃 I do facilitate them being able to do it though - big difference 😃

@joseph30 - I do not agree with this at all. If you are still helping your child complete their homework at secondary school, I don’t actually think you are helping your child at all. Unless they are stuck or need help accessing certain resources, they should be doing their homework independently. How are they meant to develop their independent study skills otherwise?

@joseph30 my parents were a hindrance if anything trying to help, shouting at me when i tried to do something the way school taught us, telling me it was the wrong way to do it etc! im
much higher educated than both of them now and thanks to myself lol 😂

My daughters homework is all on a tablet (school policy and they provide the tablet) she also has some work to do on paper ect but 9 times out of 10 she doesn't do it because its the holidays and her attitude is "well I want a break too" so I don't force it and she knows if she doesn't do it and gets a detention that's on her, email the school and say you are away for the week on a family.holiday so no homework will be getting done?

My daughter always gets loads of homework over the holiday. It’s so unfair as she usually gets about 16 pieces a week in term time.

I had this year's ago with my daughter. Pre good Internet and we're in a caravan. We were go in away and she was set homework. She didn't do it. I sent a letter to school, explaining we had been on holiday, and that if I had taken her out of school to go on holiday they wouldn't have given her work to do while she was away. I also spoke to the education dept at the council, and they said the school shouldn't be setting homework in school holidays.

I NEVER did homework while I was at school and I still left with 11 GCSEs grade A-C .. I also refused to enforce homework for my own child for the reasons you stated, he spends 6 hours a day 5 days a week doing learning at school, when hes at home its HIS time.

No way! My Yr 7 daughter gets 10 pieces minimum a week as it is ! I wouldn't b expecting rhem to do any in the hols ..write a letter/email into the school to explain why your child will not be completing it. X

@johnnythunder why not ...
Its about learning self motivation and time management ...these kids today are gonna be in for a right old shock when they get to a real job with actual rules and targets .. attitudes like yours are turning your kids into snowflakes .

@stephanie08918 so ur telling me wen u take annual leave from work (assuming u actually work) that u also take time out of ur annual leave to do work do u? Coz if I was doing that in my job role I can tell u now I'd b looking for something else.its not about rules and targets at all everyone is entitled to a break and it's no diff for kids and adults alike ! Kids more so coz they r exactly that they learn thru play and actually experiencing real life situations than putting pen to paper!
Snowflakes ..pfft.. if u think that the world evolves around work and not being able to enjoy a few weeks outta the Yr to do what u enjoy doing then u must b seriously rich & miserable .I know which 1 I'd chose 😏

@johnnythunder As an adult you are always working ..
Or does your house clean itself ?
Your dinners apoear magically from the sky .
Kids homework is merely a tool for managing respinsibility ....but if you cant see that then fair enough ..all im saying is when these kids grow up they will be in for a shock as they cant sit on their arses a day on video consoles 🤷‍♂️
