Excessive Holiday Homework: Is This Normal? Need to Vent About My Son's English Teacher

Homework isn't compulsary until yr 10 when it's for G.C.S.E's regardless of what school your child attends. Totaly your choice as a parent to let them do the homework.

Mine always have a bit of homework to be done during the holidays - it's never bothered them, doesn't bother me either. They tend to get it done the first weekend so its out of the way

Mine are in secondary and it seems to be the done thing tbh.
They both have homework to do over the holidays every time.
It can be annoying but I guess it keeps their brains working too. I just try to make sure they do it straight away so it's out of the way then can enjoy rest of the holidays.

My 11 year old hasn’t done a single piece of homework his whole primary life, he doesn’t want to, and I won’t make him. He does however read for over an hour every night, and never misses a day of school- he’s not behind, he’s perfectly average, and homework isn’t everything. His secondary school also doesn’t require him to do any homework in September. So I haven’t set him up for failure for secondary either before someone pipes up that!

I am in agreement with you.... My daughter is currently in Yr11 and for the past saturdays I've had voicemails left on my phone for her to go in for saturday sessions, 9.30am-12.30pm, the previous holidays school were calling us while we were away on a family holiday, hounding us, asking why she wasnt in school for extra sessions (during the easter holidays!!) and ive had an email today expecting her to attend sessions tuesday, Wednesday and thursday next week during half term, as in her holiday time!! No. I've already said to school that she will go in if she feels like she wants or needs to, but im not forcing her. Its not productive if she doesnt want to be there. She will get out of her GCSEs what she puts into them. She hands her homework in on time 99%of the time. She works bloody hard and is a lovely polite young lady that has never had any trouble at school at all. She's entitled to rest and relaxation, not having to go in on her weekends and holidays 😳🤦‍♀️ her free time. Absolutely not on tbh. But ive not said that to her , just left her to decide if she wants to attend the sessions or not....

In year 8 I would be expecting regular homework and also work over the holidays. I didn’t/don’t enforce homework at primary school but at high school it is different and also good practice for when GCSE’s come around.

I mean I was the kid who bought maths workbooks and spelling books to take on holiday, plus tried to learn at least 50 words of the local language whilst there. So I loved it. My kids follow me and choose to spend some of their holidays learning stuff. But I can see both sides.
