Advice on Transitioning to Homeschooling: Pros, Cons, and Starting Points

@tonyj88 as far as I know home schooling isnt the same as textbook schooling.
In any case, I think our education system needs a complete overhaul but the government would prefer to teach the masses about the Egyptians, religion and how to make a shepherds pie.
Where would they be if the masses understood mortgages, investments APRs, basic economics etc etc.
it would be a very different world - particularly for them.

@tad91 you have to have a minimum of a degree to even train to be a teacher. A lot of teacher training programs will only accept a 2:1 or 1st. I wouldn’t say that isn’t educated.

@hostjanemorin I’m not saying all teachers are thick. I’m saying I know many who are and have zero common sense, nor are they the most articulate. A degree doesn’t mean you’re any more capable to reach your kids than many parents would be hence my response to this gentleman
My daughters last teacher was not the sharpest tool in the box that’s for sure. My sister works for the educational board and has at times been horrified at how many teachers lack the basics.

@tonyj88 it’s all 3 sadly. The system is poor. Our head was appalling, as a governor with responsibility for SEN I asked the headmaster what he was doing with the extra funding for the children on the special needs register, his reply was that as head he could spend it where he liked, which happened to be football kits for the school team 😡 My sons teacher was worse than useless, had no interest in helping the special needs children and gave them all to me, an unqualified helper, to support with no particular resources supplied. She was only interested in the children that were doing well and made her look good. We took our “stupid child” out of that school. He’s just received his PhD, No thanks to that particular school. I can totally understand why people would want to home school, it was certainly something we’d considered, I’d already taught him to read, write and spell and was then told I was expected to teach him his times tables, it made me wonder what they were teaching him at school - nothing apparently as it’s pretty difficult to learn anything without the basics.

@shingler7992 it’s rather dependent on the teachers you have. Some of the teachers I’ve worked with are far worse than some of the excellent home schoolers I’ve encountered. If teachers can’t even spell or know the difference between site and sight there’s not a lot of hope for the children.

@tonyj88 All those who defend murder cases, operate cranes and rewire houses were taught their grasp of words, sense of responsibility, and basic mechanics and physics, most likely by teachers x

don’t listen , there’s so much you can access online and when they’re older there’s plenty of clubs , online classes , private tuition if that what you want .
Some kids thrive in school and some kids can’t so those parents home Ed . Home school is following a curriculum, home education is not .. yes you have to provide a full rounded education but that doesn’t have to look like school x

@tonyj88 I’m a teacher too but what I’d say is pedagogy will mean little in a homeschooling environment where there is little formal learning. Most times home schooling at primary level is entirely child driven - they learn what they are interested in and not what they are not, many will cover some maths and reading but often formal education is shelved in favour of more holistic learning. For many kids this works but there obviously will be challenges later if there are gaps in knowledge when compared to peers. That being said as a teacher you only have to be one step ahead of the kids so most parents are perfectly capable. My concern would be that 4 at very different academic phases - two of which are used to formal learning will be a difficult challenge. But subject knowledge wise homeschoolers generally expose kids to their own areas of strength and knowledge so they really won’t spend the same amount of time on for example science any way

Majority of our other Home educator friends parent are Teachers, lecturers, scientists, Doctors, surgeons etc. We have been lucky as they have organised group tuition. I think we all need to educate our own kids to our own choices and keep our business out of other parents choices. School is just one option... If you are convinced Home education is wrong... Then be happy with your own choices of traditional school. Don't insult or critise what works for other many other families.
I wish my kids enjoyed school.. I would have loved to have not have the responsibility all on my shoulders 🤷🏼‍♀️ but must admit... The social side of it is huge. My kids had too many friends from HE 😂 it was sooo sociable.
I used to love getting my kids correcting the grammar and spelling in our reports from the Elective home education department who assesed our excellent Home education provision. 😂 We would send them back to them with the corrections and our markings (they had a great sense of humour about it)

Pros are that they aren’t being taught an outdated agenda/syllabus and will be educated based on what’s best for them rather than for the purpose of meeting targets.
Cons (for some) are that you are with your kids every minute of the day

I would get on some home ed groups local to yourself and chat with people who have actual knowledge of home educating.
They would be able to give you a much fairer image of what to expect.
Home ed is not about trying to replicate school, it's a unique and broad opportunity to educate your children in the way that works best for them.
There are huge home ed communities so socialisation is imo better than schools as they are not forced to be with up to 30 other children, sat next to people they may not like. In actual fact home ed children can often interact with children of a wider age range, you can interact in like minded groups so can often have a common interest to work from.

You need to be crazy educated to be able to home ed . You just need to be able to find answers and provide resources so that they learn x
