Planting in Gravely Soil of Raised Flower Bed – Do We Need to Remove Stones or Improve Soil? Plus, Best Summer Flowers Recommendations

@jesusfreak2402 oh I see thank you! Never known why peat-free was an option or how it was better! We are on a 4 acre plot of peat soil so wondered if it would hinder my plants being potted in peat soil! I didn’t even think about the possibility of an environmental factor! Many thanks!

My whole garden is like this and it’s no problem. I’d pick out really big stones as you are planting, but leave the little ones.
Add some compost for extra nutrients as you plant and things should do well.

Plan well, don’t impulse buy. Think of sun/shade coverage. Plant evergreens and perennials first, leaving little spots for annuals you can change up. Add compost with each plant to freshen up the soil. Water well as new plants need extra water as they settle. Fun to have a blank canvas 🙂

Is that bed always in shade? If so will need to plant things that like shade. If its clay soil then the stones are very helpful for drainage. Agree adding compost for nutrients is a good plan x

Ultimately go to a store and find things you like and talk to the staff. You can have all the advice in the world online but it doesn’t always plan out. I’ve grown things in gravel soil well that aren’t recommended for that kinda soil. Sometimes it’s trial and error with things.
I always wanted to grow pumpkins but never was successful because they were all either male or female so never pollinated to grow the fruit. Took me years to find out the truth.

I would plant herbs, rosemary, chives, and parsley grow well and lavender too. These fill out and grow easily. Don't mind gravelly soil either. Salvias are great. Lemon balm will grow anywhere!

Stones will help with drainage, I'd probably add in some good rotted manure to help give any plants a good start. Once you've planted put a thick layer of mulch to help stop the weeds coming through.

Yep, soil improver and look for plans that like well drained or any soil type. If you want a cottage garden feel that the bees will love go for lavender, fox gloves, aquilegia, dicenta, all very pretty and will come back year after year and spread. In the autumn plant some spring bulbs, daffodils, alliums, etc. Good luck and enjoy 🌷
