Planting in Gravely Soil of Raised Flower Bed – Do We Need to Remove Stones or Improve Soil? Plus, Best Summer Flowers Recommendations

As a rule of thumb, gravelly is good, it means it has good drainage.
The only thing that’s worth keeping an eye on is nutrient content. So I’d say add some compost and soil improver to improve nutrient content.
It also depends on what you want to plant - almost all plants come with instructions on the type of soil needed

What is the aspect (which wat is the bed looking - north-south-west?
As long as this is not a north facing wall, Mediterranean herbs will do well, like rosemary, thyme - both love good drainage and rosemary prefers poorer soil.
Lavender will do well too.
All need sun for at least part of the day.
Plant a couple of climbers too. They will make the wall look lovely.

Ive just planted in ours. I went for perennial plants. Will have Clemantis and climbing hydrangea on each side. I have two salvia, sone aubretia for ground coverage, grasses, hardy fuchsia, some lavender ans a few other bits. I am hoping they grow. Not the best of of gardeners

Roses would look & smell lovely, only need pruning at the end of the year. Can manage with the extreme cold weather we have over the winter too!🌹

Your local garden centre will also be really useful. If you go in with a budget in mind and ask for help they will be able to point you in the right direction. You can then see what you like while you’re there!

@mrebecca I think it's through the council..my neighbour used to get two massive lorry loads delivered as had a big garden and she only paid for delivery. But you can collect. Your have to Google to find hun but it is available.

I would recommend a wallflower, we planted these for the first time last year and they give so much for very little. They flower from now until end of summer and are absolutely beautiful and have become a garden favourite for me as they don’t need deadheading and just keep flowering.

This looks like something I had years ago, could never rember the name of it, but it grew like wild flower and the bees loved it, I will be getting one of these tomorrow 😍😍😍
