Confused About Airport Liquid Rules: Why All the Different Guidelines and Exceptions?

@bobo_mcpherson it was in August 2006. The plan was to bring down flights travelling from Heathrow to North America. I know this because it was a couple of weeks before husband and I were flying to NY from Heathrow! To begin with passengers weren’t allowed any liquids in hand luggage or your person at all. Not even lip balm. The security was insane and they searched everyone rigorously. It was only 5 years after 9/11 so people were still nervous about terrorists and suicide bombers on planes. The flight crew handed out cups of water during flights. Not long afterwards they started the 100ml rule. 🙂

@humbeda this one baffles me too. I had 2 lighters, rescue remedy and a lip balm. Had to throw a lighter away. But another person can have a whole bag of cosmetics/liquids.

If you appear organised and put your liquids that are 100 ml or less in individual size, 1000 ml in total in a clear zip lock type of bag then put it in the tray they are usually okay , if you have bits and pieces in your hand luggage then they start checking

We traveled for the last school year, covering I-don’t-know-how-many airports in various countries.
It depends. They have leeway and use it. There is no rhyme or reason. Many places now don’t bother with the clear bag - just out and visible, or easy to get to, and not ridiculous amounts is enough. A few airports you don’t even need to separate it! I hope that will become more common.
Accept you may or may not have things searched. Give yourself time.
As for the why?
Because they can.

I forgot my suncream was in my hand luggage coming home from Fueteventura (late flight so kept sun cream) only realised the day after when I unpacked my hand luggage

@wchancek we fly in and out of Fuerte a lot and it’s totally random chaos imo. They’ve let my kids wander through with full water bottles (that I didn’t even realise they hadn’t emptied!) but then taken a cigarette lighter off me! Depends how they feel I think 😂

I think half the time it’s them not doing their job as efficient. When they let more through etc. I don’t understand why it’s 10 items and the amount per item and the plastic bag thing either but I know in Amsterdam you can take your drink through and don’t have to worry.
