World Book Day: It's About Encouraging Reading, Not Costume Competitions!

@bemynanny it isn't about whether you could give a shit though. This post wasn't for you. It was for the parents whose kids can't or won't do that stuff, for the parents whose kids struggled to go to school for the whole week because the routine was messed up and they can't cope with changes to routine. This wasn't a rant, it was a reassurance, and those with kids who struggled, or who were themselves too burned out or broke to celebrate it, deserved to see they weren't alone.

@godfather20071
Absolutely agree, I have seen far better ideas that schools are doing for world book day than dressing up such as writing a short review of their favourite book, making one of the characters using a wooden spoon, creating a scene from the book in a box such as a shoe box! Cheaper, much more imaginative and things that actually relate to a book!

Oh my goodness well said. Glad it’s not just me who thinks this. I prefer my daughter’s school idea which was making a prop from a book rather than a costume.
World book day has just turned into fancy dress day which it is not. Can do that at Halloween or any other time

I am the parent who always buys the costume as I dread the thought of making one as it never turns out right , i stopped doing it years ago. But that doesn't mean I don't like seeing the amazing costumes and ideas some people have come up with , if you have the time and the creative mind to do it that's great 🙂 I just don't, but i don't begrudge other people for it 🙂

My son's school just did a general dress up day in whatever you want (every kid has at least one costume of some description) and then they each brought in a book they love. They were all buzzing about their different costumes but then could bring in a book they loved and not worry about it fitting the book, i thought it was a brilliant idea! All the excitement of dressing up but none of the stress or expense of it 🤷🏼‍♀️👍

Home made are the best. Loads of ideas if u Google. No need to buy and schools don't expect parents too either. Maybe suggest other ideas now for nxt year to school. Ours this year wore their pjs and brought in their bedtime story that they read.

I spent £1.50 and My wonderful arty daughter painted wimpy kid on it for my son. He didn’t want to wear anything that didn’t represent a book he likes. This simple top made him So happy after a week of him stressing not knowing what to wear.
I loved looking at all the pictures of kids dressed up in fantastic costumes, but sometimes it seemed it was more about the parents than the kids. 😅🤪

It been challenging for years chooses costume but or make costume refuses to wear as suddenly itchy / scratchy or just doesn’t like it so ends up wearing a third of the costume 😂this year i thought they must not be doing anything (yr6) as I’d not seen a letter. 24hrs before my son reminds me it’s fancy dress day for wbd tomorow 🤬”it’s ok mum I’m going in my footy kit there’s books about footballers” only wore the top! Literally wore his normal clothes and couldn’t of been happier 😂😂😂😂

Am so glad my kids school doesn't dress up. They got to do a non uniform day and then on world book Day they brought in there favourite book

@bljudson apparently 1 in 5 children don't own any books at all.
Dressing up is optional and lots of kids don't (my son went in normal clothes this year) so it's not unusual if people don't dress up. But being unable to bring in a book? I think some kids would be embarrassed

@aquinas379 agree. There’s also friends who help each other out by lending stuff! I have loaned multiple outfits and books over the years to children and teachers and still do, especially as my kids are too old now - I miss it!
