World Book Day: It's About Encouraging Reading, Not Costume Competitions!

I had no time and didn’t want to spend money. My boys already had blue coats, I bought two red hats for £5 and both boys went as Paddington snd looked great. Minimal effort:-)

I absolutely love to see other kids costumes. Unfortunately I have no talent in costume making. BUT I still enjoy seeing others!

When my oldest daughter who is now 22, was about 8…. She came home and told me it was book day the next day and had to dress as character… it was an incredibly tough time in my life financially, and I only had £5…. I went to shop and bought a £1 white T-shirt, a clip in fake red & black hair reduced to £2, an inflatable guitar for £1 and a pack of markers for £1….. I put on sparkly tights, denim shorts, ripped up tshirt abit and drew on it, then did her hair & make up and she went as a bratz rock angel… she had the book, and she actually won best costume:-) we were so pleased cos our heart, soul and last £5 went into that….. as you’ll see from pic, we didn’t even have a tv stand! Lol

Spot on. In the earlier days my kids went as superheros (they usually asked for costumes for Xmas and birthdays). But as they got older they lost interest and decided to go in their school uniforms and their were other pupils who did that too. I think it's fine if you can afford it or are crafty. But it's fine also if you can't afford it or aren't crafty and your kids want to go in their uniform. As long as the school encourages to have fun and to pick up and read books that's what matters.

Definitely not a ‘yay me’! I found it great to see lots of variety. Seeing kids beaming regardless of homemade or bought. I love making costumes and Facepainting. That’s my strength and I’m going to use it to my advantage and if anyone wants my help I’m glad to do it! If my kid doesn’t get an A for maths and her friend does. I celebrate it. I celebrate anyone’s achievements regardless of what I can and can’t. I say ‘Let’s celebrate everyone’. Life’s too short. ❤️❤️

@easycompany I’m all about the last minute too! 😂
I just don’t get why people don’t just be happy for others or celebrate others achievements. If you can’t, then that’s more on you!

The school doesn’t force children to dress up. They decide to do something fun and say you can dress up. They don’t say it’s mandatory, it’s the parents that make it into a competition and into something it’s not. It annoys me every year that people come out and moan at schools for doing it. If they stopped then some parents will moan they’re not doing it. Schools can’t win!! They’re not going to say anything to anyone coming in their own clothes or school clothes. It’s only a huge deal if parents make it out to be!
