World Book Day: It's About Encouraging Reading, Not Costume Competitions!

I stained my child. He was the very hungry caterpillar and the face paint wouldn’t come off properly. The next morning I did my best with makeup remover oil but he has sensitive skin so I couldn’t scrub too hard. He went to school looking jaundice 😂
There’s no need to go all out for some fancy costume. Do something your kid loves, wether it’s a headband, face paint, or nothing. Mine appreciate that I don’t have much so can’t do much. I think it’s the sweetest. One Halloween I had nothing but they were so chuffed with cat nose and whiskers done with eyeliner. Teach your kids to appreciate little, and they won’t be upset when someone else has a lot 😊 x

My other one went as the rainbow from the dinosaur that pooped a rainbow. I was going to paint a poop on the other cheek but my partner said I can’t 😂

My son was an Oompa Loompa. His costume cost the whole of £5 and a few bits of thread and a needle. I didn’t want to spend a fortune for one day so I took what was in his wardrobe and just bought little bits. And this was the result.

It's not a yay me moment..some parents genuinely enjoy having a creative outlet that they can use to do something for or with their kids. It's great if you have the time and can. I wish I could do it more - I love making stuff for my children but Im not always able to. Plus being able to make from scratch with your child (for those that do this) gives the child some autonomy, a role as creative director that some times they don't get when they were everyday clothing.

My husband decorated a spare potato for our youngest as he loves supertato. He then went in brown clothes. My others went in their PJ's.

My daughter didn't seem to know it is about books. I'm sure the teacher explained but she honestly was just interested in costumes. I also didn't see parents from abroad posting. So it is really UK primary dress up day.

In our school we don’t dress up but still focus on the children’s favourite book and spend the day celebrating books and reading. Did feel a little bit sad seeing all the great costumes but with 3 kids I think I’d be over finding a new costume each year pretty quickly 😅 and do agree that the school is stopping any divides between its pupils by celebrating world book day the way it does
