Morning, I am going to Vienna in two weeks for 3nights arrive midday on Thursday and have most of Sunday there. What are hidden gems to explore. I am already going to the zoo as it's the main reason I'm going. We have also hired a car so we can drive anywhere within an hour or two away from the city center. All ideas are welcome
😁

We only stopped for a few hours on a day trip from Bratislava. But we were blown away by the architecture. Even seemingly nothing buildings were amazing.

The Lipizzaner horses whilst training, the butterfly house, the large wooden ferris wheel, St Stephens Cathedral. The whole city is super walkable and there is so much to see.

Vienna is incredible. We’ve spent various holidays there, most recently a week at October half term with kids ages 7 and 4. We walked miles. You can get a 24 hour ticket for the underground which is great value - our 7 year old needed her own ticket, little one was free. The zoo is incredible. It’s a full day on its own, behind Schonbrunn Palace. The Palace is another full day; one wing of the Palace is a children’s museum - it used to be the old nursery rooms, and our kids loved dressing up, wearing and doing the hair on wigs, laying the table, etc. Other highlights are the cathedral catacombs, the wheel at the Prater fairground (which has featured in various films), the Kunsthistorisches Museum, a horse & carriage ride, various playgrounds around the ring, some amazing grand cafe (we liked Cafe Sperl and Cafe Centrale), the Hofburg, and get tickets in advance for a rehearsal at the Spanish Riding School. Eat Sacher torte at Hotel Sache. And the just walk miles and soak up the atmosphere. In 3 days you will scarcely touch the surface, it’s such a lovely city! We’ve also done day trips out by train to Sopron in Hungary and Bratislava, and last time got the train out to Melk (the amazing abbey!) and then got a boat along the Danube to Krems and got the train back, which was a super day out. But in 3 days I’d just stay in the City and make the most of it.

Also, the zoo isn’t cheap. If you know you want to do a few expensive attractions it’s worth buying the relevant number of places on the Vienna Flexi Pass. We did the maths and whilst the main Pass wasn’t worth it for us, buying entry to a few attractions on the Flexi Pass was - the zoo and Schonbrunn and it started to be a good saving.

Definitely do the Haus Des Meeres (aquarium with 360 degrees views of Vienna), Natural History Museum (both amazing architecturally & style as other museums AND historically!) - great for wet rainy days, Prater Park for the funfair, cafe demel for kaiserschmarnn and hot choc, stephanplatz to see the church & the manner shop to get the wafers 😋, karlsberg/grinzig for the views of Vienna/lower austria and adventure playground/farm (accessible via tram & bus), naschmarkt for fresh produce etc, and DEFINITELY Schonbrünn, go to the Gloriette for a coffee and stunning views of Vienna and round to the zoo and back via the botanical gardens and palmenhaus! Enjoy Vienna - but it’s not the friendliest of cities 🤣

Spanish Riding School, zoo (I know you said you were going there), Schonbrunn Palace, St Stephen's Cathedral, generally walking around, Jewish museum. We did a day trip by train to Bratislava.
