Discovering the Impact of Organic Produce: How Pesticides Affect Flavor and My Shift Towards Organic Eating

Sort of family related. I recently bought an organic fruit and veg box for my family as it is healthier and wow! I have just found out that the bitter taste after lots of food is pesticides! Spinach is sweet so are greens and even carrots don't have a bitter aftertaste! This has made me think now about food flavours so now I am going to try and go as organic as I can.

@followup I love your enthusiasm (and also get a Riverford box and notice the taste difference) but I think a lot of the flavour is to do with their fruit&veg selection (those that have the best flavours rather than keep longest/have uniform size/shape - I notice you need to eat their produce quicker than most supermarket options, but usually not a prob!) and also how fresh the produce is, and that it’s harvested when perfect! I buy some organic (prioritising meat, dairy&dirty dozen others have mentioned) and I don’t notice any improved flavour from supermarket purchases.

@followup they have a Riverford fb group where we share recipes etc. I love their ethos and totally agree about flavour! I sometimes have to top up with organic stuff from supermarket and I still wonder what processing occurs as it always lasts longer (no floppy carrots!) I’m trying to get an auto immune condition under control and I’m sure food is a huge part of it

Of you can afford the regular organic box that’s great - but if not you can find online the dirty dozen and clean fifteen which will give you an idea of which fruit and veg you should get organic if you can (the dirty dozen) and which you don’t need to (clean 15). I always thought carrots were in the dirty dozen particularly as a root veg, but they aren’t on there now.

@marcusg10 they are all fresh, non-organic, but the dirty ones have the most pesticide residue on them, the clean ones the least. So you know to buy the dirty ones organically to avoid pesticide residue. The list changes every year.

@marcusg10 I think they say generally that berries and soft fruit and vegetables with a lot of surface ie spinach, lettuce and so on are really worth focussing on getting organically (or growing your own) if you have to choose. But even things like apples are sprayed many many times during the season so if you can afford to it’s probably best to go for organic as much as possible. It’s not always easy!
