Surprised to Learn Any Card Can Power a Hotel Room – Was I the Only One Who Didn’t Know?

Tell me I’m not the only one that didn’t realise any old card will work in a slot to turn on the electrics in a hotel room?! I have spent 45 years assuming it had to be the actual room key card. (Accidentally put my Nectar card in, hence how I know!)
EDIT - just to be clear I didn’t want to encourage blasé use of electricity and be solely responsible for pushing hotel prices up
😆
. I just like the fact if you only get one room key and fancy a bath etc, the other person can leave and return as they wish without you sitting there in the dark!

What you can also do is put your debit card there, forget it, and then realise a mile from your hotel that you are trying to pay with your room key card.... not that I've done that... 😳

All you need is something in there that breaks the circuit (in most hotels anyway!). We stayed at one hotel where you had to use a genuine key but that’s the only one I’ve stayed at that was like that
