Evening all.
I was after some advice if anyone could help. Im wanting to train to be a medical secretary but unsure where to start? I dont have any qualifications or training in admin or computers so I assume a course that covers this would be an advantage? I have some basic computer skills and alot of customer service and care experience. Id rather not do an apprenticeship as the wage wouldnt be sustainable for our family. Any advice or any medical secretaries in this group could comment Id be very grateful. Many thanks.

I did a qualification in administration and medical administration which included Medical Terminology, audio typing, medical audio typing and word processing up to 5 and then additional with medical. To be a medical secretary you’d need to be a proficient typist and be able to do audio typing too.

I had no qualifications to my name but got a junior job at a gp surgery working in the administration department. They trained me and placed me on an couple of medical terminology courses. I worked for them for years. Loved my job. I worked up but then got bored so went to a hospital and worked directly for a consultant. I found the job very boring and isolating but stayed for a year.
I didn't have qualifications in typing but didn't take me long to get upto speed as you are typing all day.
I gained the hospital position because of exsperience in the medical field more then qualifications as had very little.
It does take time, the medical field is like learning a different language.
Wish you all the best on your journey on whatever route you take. ❤️

Definitely learn to audio type - the quicker the better! Medical terminology course probably isn’t a requirement but would be massively helpful for you. RSA typing course looks good on a cv for secretarial. I would echo what Becky said though that experience in a medical admin role would probably be more beneficial than courses. There are so many different medical admin roles in addition to secretaries (particularly in gp surgery’s) you may find something you fancy more. Good luck 😊

You could be a Secretaries assistant...could learn and pick up a lot from that and progress....fill in for sickness/ annual leave....willingness to learn...work hard...be helpful...all good useful qualities
